A trailer’s suspension system is key to safe, stable towing — especially when carrying heavy loads or livestock.
Components like spring bushes, axle bump stops, and leaf springs work together to absorb shocks, keep the trailer balanced, and protect your load. If any of these parts are worn or damaged, your trailer could become unsafe, uncomfortable, and illegal to tow.
What Are Spring Bushes?
Spring bushes are rubber or polyurethane sleeves fitted into the eye of the trailer’s leaf spring, where it connects to the chassis or hanger. They absorb vibration and movement between metal parts.
Signs of Worn Spring Bushes:
- Clunking or knocking sounds
- Uneven or excessive tyre wear
- Poor ride quality or trailer sway
- Visible cracks or movement in the bush
When to Replace:
Check during regular servicing or if handling feels off. Replace if bushes are cracked, worn, squashed, or missing.
What Are Axle Bump Stops?
Axle bump stops are rubber blocks fitted to the chassis or suspension above the axle. They act as a buffer to stop the axle hitting the chassis when the suspension compresses fully — such as over potholes or when carrying a heavy load.
Signs of Worn or Damaged Bump Stops:
- Loud banging when hitting bumps
- Visible wear, cracks, or missing rubber
- Axle contacting the chassis during travel
When to Replace:
Replace any damaged or perished bump stops. They’re affordable and prevent major structural damage from harsh suspension impacts.
What Are Trailer Leaf Springs?
Leaf springs support the trailer’s weight and absorb shocks from the road. They’re made of layered steel strips and are one of the most hard-working parts of the trailer.
Signs of Worn or Damaged Springs:
- Trailer sits lower than normal or uneven
- Cracked, rusted, or broken spring leaves
- Excessive bounce or poor load handling
- Strange noises from suspension
When to Replace:
Leaf springs should be replaced if any leaf is cracked, corroded, or sagging. Always replace in pairs for balance.
Suspension Maintenance Tips
- Inspect all suspension components at least once a year
- Replace bushes, bump stops, or springs at first sign of wear
- Keep suspension clean and free of mud/debris
- Don’t overload the trailer — it accelerates wear
- Lubricate moving parts where required (except sealed bushes)
